Chess Champ
In writing that the U.S. has never had a world champion in chess we did not overlook the record of Paul C. Morphy (1837-1884) as stated by B. Smith.
Staunton, of England, who held the title, refused to play Morphy officially, so Mr. Morphy was never accorded the honor. They did play two unofficial games, both of which were won by Morphy.
The one useful value of chess is to discover genius, as, for example, fifteen-year-old Bobby Fischer, U.S. chess champion.
Had Paul Morphy, after discovering his talent, taken up science he would no doubt have made an even greater name for himself.

Mother of Bobby Fischer pickets the American Chess Foundation at the White House

Mother of Bobby Fischer pickets the American Chess Foundation at the White House
Washington, DC - September 21: Regina Fischer, of Brooklyn, NY, is picketing the American Chess Foundation at the White House in an effort to gain support for sending a United States chess team to the World Chess Olympics in Leipzig, East Germany. Regina Fischer's son, Bobby, 17, is a three-time national chess champion. Photographed September 21, 1960 in Washington, DC.

1960, Bobby Fischer in Leipzig Chess Olympiad; Regina Fischer Pickets the American Chess Foundation in front of the White House, September 21, 1960

Regina Fischer Pickets the American Chess Foundation to allocate funding for American Team participation at Leipzig Chess Olympiad, in front of the White House, September 21, 1960. Larry Evans went on to conduct a hit piece on Fischer some 12 years later, and one of his highly fanciful allegations was that Mrs. Fischer was “chained” to the White House fence. Search for what your lying eyes will tell you: No chain exists. Furthermore, the sign Mrs. Fischer is wearing confirms she has no protest with the White House as, the sign affirms, President Dwight "Ike" Eisenhower supports Mrs. Fischer's goal to acquire funding for a Chess Olympics Team. Rather, the source of Mrs. Fischer's contention is with the American Chess Foundation who says “NO” to funding.

1960, American Chess Foundation, Regina Fischer Protest to send U.S. Team to the Leipzig Chess Olympics

Sun-Journal, Lewiston, Maine, Friday, September 30, 1960

The American Chess Foundation may be the only sports group in the world being picketed by the disgruntled populace in this case one by the name of Mrs. Regina Fischer. It so happens that the lady is the mother of a 17-year-old chess whiz, the U.S. national champion and mother wants someone to pay his bills overseas to compete in the World Chess Olympics to be held at Leipzig, East Germany, on the 14. Mama insists that the ACF has the cash to pay the bills and insists that Pres. Eisenhower favors having a team in the tournament. She has paraded back and forth with a sign expressing her indignation. The ACF officials in rebuttal say that the lady can walk back and forth as many miles as it is from New York to Leipzig and that “that's that” but say they, the chief hitch is that the State Department is NOT in favor of sending a team to East Germany, which is behind the Iron Curtain, and therefore will not furnish passports and give their blessing. Then too, says the ACF, the United States Chess Federation is the group which decides the matter as far as chess authorities are concerned, and adds that the matter hasn't been settled and that the Federation awaits further orders or information from the State Department. And so Mama may wear out shoes but Bobby looks due to stay here in The States, wearing out the seat of his pants, until Uncle Sam feels on more friendly terms with those East Germans who happen right now to be throwing their weight around over in “the homeland”…

Examine the style of chair, location of clock vs corresponding player. All over the internet its claimed both photos are from the 1960 Leipzig tournament. How?

1960, Leipzig Chess Olympiade, Miguel Najdorf and Bobby Fischer

Anonymous: “They must have moved rooms/tables, (most likely after an adjournment? It was a longer game, after all), since things like the chairs are different.
(It doesn't help that one photo is made with the flash engaged, while the other uses no flash. This makes certain reflective surfaces appear different in color.)
Perhaps, they were the only game still in progress after all others finished, so they moved to the “main” board? (Although, why weren't they on the “main” board to begin with… weren't they the main attraction?)
Anyway, from the position of the pieces in the photos, the first photo (on the left in the collage) seems to be taken around move 11, while the second photo (on the right) seems to be from near the end of the match, around move 54.”
(See attached collage).

Hotel Astoria and Park Hotels of Leipzig, provided housing for the contestants in the Leipzig Olympiade of 1960. The tournament venue was located not far away in a building three-story building, the chess tournament tables requiring space on two floors.

The Astoria and the Park Hotels, Leipzig. (The Hotel Astoria was opened in Leipzig on December 5, 1915 and operated until December 30, 1996. It is located immediately west of the main train station on Willy-Brandt-Platz between Kurt-Schumacher-Straße and Gerberstraße. The closure was followed by the vacancy of the building complex, the facade of which is a listed building.) The Park hotel of Leipzig, may still be in operation.
GM Isaac Kashdan answers the main question, “…The tournament is being held in a three-story building generally used for large receptions and exhibitions. There are 40 chess games in a large central area on each of two floors. The building is exceptionally well lighted, a prime requisite that is not always available in chess events…" but doesn't give the actual name of the building that served as the venue for the games. The full story can be found in The Los Angeles Times Los Angeles, California Sunday, November 06, 1960

'til the world understands why Robert J. Fischer criticised the U.S./British and Russian military industry imperial alliance and their own Israeli Apartheid. Sarah Wilkinson explains:

Bobby Fischer, First Amendment, Freedom of Speech
What a sad story Fischer was,” typed a racist, pro-imperialist colonial troll who supports mega-corporation entities over human rights, police state policies & white supremacy.
To which I replied: “Really? I think he [Bob Fischer] stood up to the broken system of corruption and raised awareness! Whether on the Palestinian/Israel-British-U.S. Imperial Apartheid scam, the Bush wars of ‘7 countries in 5 years,’ illegally, unconstitutionally which constituted mass xenocide or his run in with police brutality in Pasadena, California-- right here in the U.S., police run rampant over the Constitution of the U.S., on oath they swore to uphold, but when Americans don't know the law, and the cops either don't know or worse, “don't care” -- then I think that's pretty darn “sad”. I think Mr. Fischer held out and fought the good fight, steadfast til the day he died, and may he Rest In Peace.
Educate yourself about U.S./State Laws --

After which the troll posted a string of profanities, confirming there was never any genuine sentiment of “compassion” for Mr. Fischer, rather an intent to inflict further defamatory remarks.

This ongoing work is a tribute to the life and accomplishments of Robert “Bobby” Fischer who passionately loved and studied chess history. May his life continue to inspire many other future generations of chess enthusiasts and kibitzers, alike.
