US Chess Experts In Leipzig Contest
Oklahoma City (UPI) — A team of American chess experts has gone to Leipzig in East Germany to challenge Soviet Russia in the 14th World Chess Olympiad.
Jerry Spann, captain of the world champion student chess team said 38 nations are competing in the Leipzig event for the title now held by Russia. Strongest contenders besides Russia are the United States and Yugoslavia, Spann said.
Isaac Kashdan, 56, chess editor of the Los Angeles Times, is captain of the U.S. champion; Other players are Bobby Fischer, 17, U.S. champion; William Lombardy, 22, who led the U. S. college all-star team to the world championship last summer at Leningrad; Robert Byrne, 32, a professor from Indiana who won the U.S. open championship in St. Louis last August; and Arthur Bisguier, 31, titleholder for the open in 1956 and 1959.
Spann was captain of the U.S. team which placed fourth in the 1958 Olympiad at Munich. U.S. teams won the world team titles in 1928, 1931, 1935 and 1937.
