Chess Players Open Olympics
An American chess team is participating in the 14th World Chess Olympiad in Leipzig, East Germany, Jerry Spann, Norman, said Monday.
Spann, captain of the world championship U. S. student team which played in Leningrad this summer, said the captaincy of the Olympic team was held open for him until last week but that he was unable to accept it.
Thirty eight nations are participating in the matches with Russia, the defending champion, favored to retain the title, Spann said. The United States and Yugoslavia are picked to give Russia the most trouble.
The matches opened, Sunday and will continue through Nov. 9. Spann said today he has no report of the results, so far.
The U. S. team, captained by Spann, placed fourth in the 1958 Olympic games in Munich, Germany.
Captain for the 1960 team is Isaac Kashdan, 56. Members are Bobby Fischer, 17; William Lombardy, 22; Robert Byrne, 32, and Arthur Bisguier, 31. Alternates are Nicholas Rossolimo, 50, and Raymond Weinstein, 19.
